The Wine
Maha Backlit 2020
In the Vineyard: Petite Sirah (46%), Mourvedre (28%), and Carignan (26%) grapes coming exclusively from the Maha state and and fully organically and biodynamically grown.
In the winery: Hand-harvested grapes with selection in the vineyard and shorting of best bunches at the winery. The most careful elaboration with autochtonous yeast and gentle aging in neutral oak barrels, with minimum use of new oak.
In the palate: Petite Sirah takes center stage in Backlit. The Petite sees the day’s first light, and the afternoon shade and coastal breezes giving ample ripeness, good acidity and fine tannins. The Mourvèdre adds tropical fruits, the Grenache bumps the spice, and the Carignan offers dark and savory notes.

Villa Creek in Maha State is fruit of a passion that translates into wines of fruit, minerality, earth and soul handcrafted on their fully organic and biodynamic West Paso Robles estate. They are loyal to their natural surroundings and seek to understand them rather than control them. They treat their farm like the living, breathing organism that it is: sixty acres surrounded by oak forests and chaparral, fed by mountain springs and seasonal creeks, and teaming with wildlife; a majestic property that rises in elevation from 1500 ft to 1800 ft (450 m to 550 m) above sea level, and feels the subtle sway of the ocean’s influence 14 miles (22.5 km) away.
