The Wine
Alka 2016
In the Vineyard: 100% Organic and Biodynamic Carmenere grapes selected from the best vineyards in the state. These are ungrafted vines, allowing the purity of Carménère’s aromas to shine through. The vineyard is planted on the lower slopes of hillsides, where irrigation is impossible.
In the winery: Double sorting of bunches and grapes, de-stemming and gentle crushing. Vatting in cement vats, cold maceration for five to seven days. Long maceration on the skins for a month. Hot post-fermentation maturation for two to three weeks. Maturation in 100% 600-litre new French oak barrels for at least 18 months (racked once every four months).
In the palate: Deep cherry red colour, bright and very intense. Intense and complex nose, with touches of black fruit balanced out by eucalyptus and spice notes such as black pepper. This rare wine offers a powerful structure with silky tannins that reflect the grapes’ perfect ripeness. The finish is lingering and complex with aromas of blackberry, spices, pepper and tobacco.
The Producer
Hacienda Araucano
Although François and his brother Jacques Lurton had been making Chilean wine since 1992, it was not until 2000 that they found the perfect spot in the Colchagua Valley. They bought 200 hectares (combining seven different estates into a single family) in an area that had never previously been used for winegrowing. Today, the estate has 28 hectares of vines, and Lolol has become a sought-after location for wine production. Located in a magnificent spot on the Ruta del Vino, we developed wine tourism on the estate to cater to the growing numbers of wine enthusiasts in Colchagua Valley.
