The Wine
Bigardo 2019
In the Vineyard: Tinta de Toro (Tempranillo) grapes from centenary old vineyards of low production. Soils based on sand, clay and rolling stones with a limestone subsoil. The Tempranillo grapes develop substantially thicker skins than in other parts of Spain due to the elevated temperatures during the day that drop substantially at night. This confers a very characteristic concentration to Toro wines.
In the Winery: Minimum intervention elaboration using gravity in all stages. Gentle ageing in oak to preserve the varietal character. Kiko Calvo employs his many years of training in different winemaking areas in the world, including California, to elaborate wines of character but easy to drink.
In the Palate: Intense and elegant with aromas of black and red fruit, licorice and cedar. Fresh but with structure and persistent with a bitter aftertaste.
The Producer
Bodegas Bigardo
Bigardo is the outcome of an intense adventure of its founder and winemaker, Kiko Calvo, in different parts of the world undergoing technical training in winemaking and viticulture that always was intended to end up being a bottle of wine. The winery name is a tribute to bigardo, a word still used in the streets of Toro to identify someone big and burly, a person with a rebellious and disobedient air, which somehow describes the owner of the winery. Kiko employs his soul into his grape growing and his winemaking in view of producing wines easy to drink and for all people. He wants young people to transit from drinking beer to drinking wine, as he knows the walk is irreversible.
