The Wine
Contino Gran Reserva 2017
In the Vineyard: A selection of the best soils from the vineyards is used to produce the Contino Reserva to offer the best possible wine in terms of acidity, concentration and maturity. The Tempranillo grapes are harvested primarily from an area of stony soil near the Ebro River, resulting in slower ageing due to the humidity of the ground. A classical mix of Rioja varieties, with slightly lower presence of Tempranillo and with Garnacha providing balancing fruit characteristics: 70% tempranillo, 15% graciano, 10% mazuelo and 5% garnacha
In the winery: Manual harvesting in 15 kg boxes. The grapes are carefully picked in the vineyard before being subjected to a meticulous selection process at the winery. After destemming, the grapes are fermented with native yeasts in concrete tanks at 26-28ºC. Then, the grapes undergo post-fermentation maceration. Malolactic fermentation also takes place in the same tanks.
In the palate: The Contino Gran Reserva is the most elegant wine produced at the winery. It stays true to the essence of classic Rioja wines while constantly striving to evolve its style. Extreme aromatic and flavor complexity, full body and a long lasting finish.

The Producer
Bodegas Contino (CVNE)
The former manor house in Laserna, in the municipality of Laguardia, is surrounded by 62 hectares of vineyards from which all its wines are sourced along a bend of the river Ebro. Its 16th-century cave cellars are amongst the oldest in the Rioja region. They are home to the echoes of deeply rooted winemaking tradition, blended with the voices of cutting-edge technologies. The history of the house dates back to the 16th century and is reflected in the winery’s name. The officer in charge of the one hundred soldiers who watched over the royal family continuously (or ‘de continuo’ in Spanish), from the Catholic Monarchs era onwards, was known as the ‘contino’.
