The Wine
Viña del Olivo 2017
In the Vineyard: Viña del Olivo, a singular vineyard, aims to be the maximum expression of Contino’s terroir as it is one of the few calcareous clay estates in Contino with a very high content of active limestone. No herbicides, and organic fertilisation. A mineral wine for ageing that expresses its modernity with harmony and balance. 85% Tempranillo, 5% Mazuelo and 10% Graciano
In the winery: the grapes are fermented in 100-hectolitre French oak vats at a temperature of 28-30ºC for ten days, after a further ten days of maceration. The grapes then undergo malolactic fermentation for 15 days in new French oak barrels (85%) and American oak barrels (15%). Finally, the wine is then aged for 16 months before being transferred to wooden vats for three months
In the palate: The best expression of the Contino Vineyard. A venerated wine that provides the maximum complexity, intensity and balance to be expected from a Rioja wine. For many, the most distinguished red wines of Spain
Professional ratings: J.S. 95pts - T.A. 95pts - R.P. 95pts
The Producer
Bodegas Contino (CVNE)
The former manor house in Laserna, in the municipality of Laguardia, is surrounded by 62 hectares of vineyards from which all its wines are sourced along a bend of the river Ebro. Its 16th-century cave cellars are amongst the oldest in the Rioja region. They are home to the echoes of deeply rooted winemaking tradition, blended with the voices of cutting-edge technologies. The history of the house dates back to the 16th century and is reflected in the winery’s name. The officer in charge of the one hundred soldiers who watched over the royal family continuously (or ‘de continuo’ in Spanish), from the Catholic Monarchs era onwards, was known as the ‘contino’.
