The Wine
Contino Graciano 2015
In the Vineyard: Contino Graciano is made from grapes harvested by hand and deposited in boxes at our 3.7-hectare San Gregorio Grande vineyard, planted in 1979 and 1989
In the winery: Manual selection in the vineyard and on the winery’s selection table to guarantee maximum quality. The main objective of this winemaking process is to preserve the characteristics of the grape variety. Alcoholic fermentation in 100-hectolitre French oak vats at a moderate temperature to ensure good colour extraction, followed by post-fermentation maceration. On 22 September, the wine is transferred to new French oak barrels (72% French and 28% American). It is in these tanks that malolactic fermentation takes place. The wine remains there for 16 months, followed by an ageing period of 6 months in pure concrete tanks
In the palate: Pioneers of the recovery of Graciano vines (difficult to maintain), Contino provides an excellent expression of this autochthonous Rioja variety in this monovarietal. Extremely delicate and with a sophisticated palate, this wine offers an incredible balance and a unique finish

The Producer

The former manor house in Laserna, in the municipality of Laguardia, is surrounded by 62 hectares of vineyards from which all its wines are sourced along a bend of the river Ebro. Its 16th-century cave cellars are amongst the oldest in the Rioja region. They are home to the echoes of deeply rooted winemaking tradition, blended with the voices of cutting-edge technologies. The history of the house dates back to the 16th century and is reflected in the winery’s name. The officer in charge of the one hundred soldiers who watched over the royal family continuously (or ‘de continuo’ in Spanish), from the Catholic Monarchs era onwards, was known as the ‘contino’.
