The Wine
Peñaranda de Duero 2019
In the Vineyard: Made with Tempranillo grapes brought by selected vineyards of 80-90 years of age in the village of Peñaranda de Duero (this is a wine of Pueblo) at high altitude. Limestone and clay soils, and a subsoil of calcareous rock, providing the typicality of this wine.
In the winery: Cold maceration during 10 days at 8 ºC before alcoholic fermentation starts. The wine ages in in 300L French oak barrels for 18 months.
In the palate: Medium-high intensity cherry red color. High aromatic intensity, characterized by fresh aromas, red fruit, spicy touches, scrubland and a marked mineral character typical of the environment and limestone terroir. A silky and velvety sensation in the mouth, with a slightly sweet tannin due to the mineralization of the terroir.
The Producer
Bodegas El Lagar de Isilla
The story of the El Lagar de Isilla Winery started in 1995 in Ribera del Duero, but dates back to the 15th century historic underground cavern below the restaurant Lagar de Isilla in Aranda de Duero. There, at a depth of 12 meters, the Zapatero Pinto family elaborated the first wine for commercialization, which has now expanded into a successful annual production of 250,000 bottles of highly recognized white and red wines. The Enological Complex in La Vid in a colonial building dating from 1890 is now house of their new winery, a gourmet shop and a very successful enotourism hotel that has granted the family the Enotourism Merit Award by the organization Rutas de Vino de España, and most recently, the Cellar Door of the Year, a recognition by Tim Atkins for the labor by El Lagar to disseminate the culture of wine.
