The Wine
Paraje Peñalobos 2018
In the Vineyard: A singular vinayard in the path of wolves at 900 meters of altitude with bunch vines of more than 100 years of age and extremely low production levels. As all centenary vineyards int he area, it contains a natural coupage dominated by Tempranillo (95%) and accompanied with Albillo and other varieties.
In the winery: hand-harvested grapes are carefully brought to the winery, cold macerated for 5-7 days at 8 degrees centigrades and fermented in open vats for 7-9 days at moderately low temperatures (24-C). Malolactc conversion and ageing for 18 months in French oak barriques of 300, 400 and 500 liters with medium toasting levels.
In the palate: Intense and deep ruby color. Extremely high aromatic intensity with ripe balck fruit, licorice, tobbaco and truffle. It is a very rounded wine with all the elements expected from a wine of outstanding quality. Complex, intense and with a long finish.
The Producer
Bodegas El Lagar de Isilla
The story of the El Lagar de Isilla Winery started in 1995 in Ribera del Duero, but dates back to the 15th century historic underground cavern below the restaurant Lagar de Isilla in Aranda de Duero. There, at a depth of 12 meters, the Zapatero Pinto family elaborated the first wine for commercialization, which has now expanded into a successful annual production of 250,000 bottles of highly recognized white and red wines. The Enological Complex in La Vid in a colonial building dating from 1890 is now house of their new winery, a gourmet shop and a very successful enotourism hotel that has granted the family the Enotourism Merit Award by the organization Rutas de Vino de España, and most recently, the Cellar Door of the Year, a recognition by Tim Atkins for the labor by El Lagar to disseminate the culture of wine.
